Smog is a short visual novel game story game made for Ludum Dare 50. No objective really, just play and enjoy the story! (Recommended to download and play, but if you play in browser, do fullscreen!)

Controls:

  • Press E to proceed through the story
  • At beginning, you are able to move left and right with A and D
  • There will be quick-actions, pressing whatever key appears on the screen

Notes:

  • Handful of silent moments, like after music and other areas. This is not a bug, I just did not have enough time to put proper audio clips and properly looped music tracks :')
  • To play the game again, the page/game will have to be refreshed/restarted

Bugs:

  • Quick-action sequence not resetting after not pressing buttons for quick-action
  • Game not resetting properly after first-playthrough

Update Log:

  • 4/5/22: Fixed quick-action sequence not resetting after not pressing buttons
  • 4/5/22: Added HTML build for original game

This game is a classic case of overscope on my part haha, several things that I originally wanted to add had to be cut from the finished game to make at least something that is playable in time. For Ludum Dare 49, I had made something much more simple so I wanted to see if I can 'reach higher' for this one.. man, was I wrong. I was already going out of my comfort zone by going for a visual novel style game, but also drawing inspiration from Heavy Rain and Detroit Become Human, I also wanted to incorporate quick-action game play where you had to press the key that appears on the screen in time. Making the base game/story ended up eating a lot more of my time than I had anticipated.

Things I wanted to add include:

  • Many more quick actions (would appeal a lot more to the theme of "Delay the Inevitable". If you know, you know haha)
  • More animations
  • Interactive dialogue (options would lead to different outcomes-ish)
  • Interactive background items
  • Actual proper cutscenes

But all of which were pretty much cut to make at least a finished product for the compo haha. The game itself was a much more artistic take on the theme rather than mechanics based, which is something outside of my comfort zone, but even though I overscoped very hard and I feel that I could have done things much better in hindsight, this was a great learning experience for me and overall was very fun, which I think is what matters the most.

Thanks for playing!

Thanks so much!

Very good initial concept! I feel that this is more of a pilot episode though, rather than a complete game. Let's see where it goes!

Thanks! I agree as well haha, I will probably explore it more sometime in the future
